A RETIRING East Lancashire Labour MP has been appointed as the new deputy director of Catholic education in England and Wales.

Greg Pope’s new job comes after he announced last year that he would not be standing for re-election for the Hyndburn constituency.

The former St Mary’s Catholic College student stood down after 18 years for 'personal reasons and to pursue other projects'.

And now he has secured his first post-politics job.

The Catholic Education Service works to promote, safeguard and support Catholic education in schools in its remit.

Mr Pope was appointed after a 'rigorous selection process' and was the unanimous choice of the final interview panel.

He said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Catholic Education Service for England and Wales as its deputy director.

“I have the benefit of a Catholic education which gave me a great start in life and I want to contribute to the endeavours which ensure that others can continue to have those same chances.”

His appointment has prompted some concern due to Mr Pope's voting record in parliament, particularly on keepnig abortion legal at 16 weeks.

Oona Stannard, chief executive and director of Catholic Education Service in England and Wales, said: “Greg’s experience in dealing with complex situations, working with people at many levels and in diverse situations, as well as his leadership of various teams will be an enormous asset to Catholic Education Service."
