THE hugely successful annual Rossendale bike show has been cancelled.

But organisers are confident the event the biggest town centre motorcycle show in Europe will be back again next year bigger and better than ever.

For the first time in 14 years the show, which attracts people from across the country and the continent, will not be held after problems finding space.

It is usually held on the last Sunday in September in the Asda car park in Bocholt Way, Rawtenstall.

But show director Mark Riley said: "The show has been postponed because of the town centre develop-ment that is going on.

"Asda is moving to the new store on August 13 and Peel Holdings, who are set to take ownership of the site, are to start demolishing it 10 days later.

"We spoke to them but they said it just wouldn't be possible to hold it there.

"It's really disappointing because it's been going every year but I can understand the problem traders have that they don't want to give up space for it."

Fears were expressed that the event would have to be cancelled earlier this year after a shortage of committee members.

But it was expected to go ahead after an emergency meeting in Haslingden Cricket Club when all the key positions were filled.

Last year 65,000 people attended the event, which raised £32,000 for local charities and was considered the best ever.

And Mr Riley revealed several acts had already been booked up for next year, with a date pencilled in for April 8.

He added: "We decided that we would regroup this year and come back with a bigger and better format next year. We are all buzzing about it."

Roger Wheeldon, development manager at Peel said: "Unfortunately we can't commit to the use of the land at this stage.

"To do so may disappoint people if at the time of the show we are unable to allow them to use it"
