A DISABLED woman today claimed a home improvement firm has left her "living in hell".

Judith Cormack, 41, said builders working on an extension at her home in Chatterton Drive, Baxenden, have made a string of mistakes.

She said the workmen, for Anglian Home Improvements, had now left but her French doors needed refitting and a leaking roof fixing.

Anglian has admitted there are problems and has vowed to "work hard to put it right".

Mrs Cormack, who lives with husband Jonathan, 37, and son David, 13, said: "The work is such a mess.

"The extension designed by myself but what they have built is nothing like what was planned."

Mrs Cormack suffers from agoraphobia, a fear of open spaces, resulting from the post-traumatic stress she suffered after a car crash four years ago, and is largely confined to the house.

She added: "It is making me more ill just sitting here all day and looking and it.

"This was supposed to provide me somewhere to sit out in the sun but I can't bear to go near it."

Mrs Cormack has now had surveys which reveal problems with the work.

A survey by Mortimers Chartered Surveyors high-lighted 11 areas of concern. They included: "the damp proof course level appears to be below ground level"; "the standard of plasterwork finish is poor"; "the roof spars have been poorly cut"; and "the floating floor is not level".

The report concludes that the project "has a standard of workmanship which is below that which could be reasonably expected."

Mrs Cormack added she has dealt with Anglian on numerous occasions in the past and has never had any problems with the company.

Work started at the house in January last year but has still not been completed and workmen have now left.

Mrs Cormack is now refusing to pay up the balance of the work, costing £8,500, of which she has paid half.

Bosses at Anglian have admitted that further work is needed to bring it up to scratch.

Melanie Russell, a spokeswoman for Anglian, said: "Unfortunately, following installation, remedial work was required at this property, which has been carried out subject to minimal outstanding work to be finished.

"We have worked hard to put right the problems at Chatterton Drive and wish to complete the minimal remedial work which is outstanding."
