YOUNGSTERS in Pendle will be showing off their soccer skills while promoting fair trade.

As part of Fairtrade Fortnight Pendle Council is running a football competition at Marsden Community School Sports Centre, Nelson.

The event also backed by Pendle Fair Trade Group, police and Building Bridges will being people from the borough's different neighbourhoods together.

Matches will be played at the Percy Street venue starting next Tuesday.

Councillor John David, executive member for the environment said prizes on offer would include fair trade footballs made in Pakistan.

He said: "Sport is a great way of bringing people together with a great community spirit and by linking these tournaments to fairtrade we are thinking about our global community too.

"It is an area where people have been exploited and poorly paid for this work and Oxfam have set up an initiative which gives people a fair wage and we are pleased to support that."

The fixture list is: Tuesday March 7, 11 to 13 year old boys; Wednesday March 8, 14 to 16 year old boys; Wednesday March 15, 14 to 16 year old girls match, a 14 to 16 year old mixed sex match and the boys finals.

All sessions take place between 6pm and 8pm.
