A Cricket club could be forced to delay the start of their season after a "misunderstanding" led to the boundary of their pitch being dug up.

Oswaldtwistle Immanuel Church Cricket Club are due to begin their campaign in the Ribblesdale Senior League in just a few weeks but that is now in serious doubt.

Pre-season friendlies are also out of the question at their New Road ground until the edges of the pitch are repaired and re-turfed.

Builders are currently improving a side road to the new Immanuel Parish Hall that has been built behind the club's pavilion, just off New Road.

The road runs alongside the club's pitch and a bid to separate the two by creating a raised grassy bank has led to the edge of the pitch being destroyed.

The work is being completed by local building company Hayhurst on behalf of Immanuel Church.

The Rev Paul Watson said: "I think there has been a misunderstanding between the builders and the cricket club.

"The club asked the builders to create a break between the pitch and the road but it has gone completely out of control.

"They have dug too far into the pitch and that certainly needs to be rectified.

"Instead of creating a small bank they have created a mini-version of the Berlin Wall.

"That has now been dug out but the damage has been done to the pitch."

The work to create the area of banked land at the edge of the cricket pitch was designed to discourage cars and other vehicles using the new road from parking on the club's out-field.

The builders have pledged to repair the damage by flattening the ground and re-seeding.

A spokesman for Immanuel Church Cricket Club said the club hoped to play their first matches of the season, which begins in April, away from home while the turf recovers.
