A St Annes food store is to close and four more Fylde shops are to undergo major changes as part of a shake-up of a supermarket group.

Eleven jobs will be lost with the closure of the Kwik Save store at St David's Road South, St Annes, as part of the transfer of the Kwik Save brand to a new company, BTTF Ltd.

Two other local stores, at Whitegate Drive, Blackpool and Clifton Drive, St Annes, will be converted into Somerfield stores as parent company, Somerfield Plc sells off its Kwik Save subsidiary.

BTTF Ltd took over the Kwik Save stores at Vicarage Lane, Blackpool and Victoria Road West, Cleveleys, as of midnight on Monday.

"Unfortunately our St David's Road South store will close," a spokesman for Somerfield Plc confirmed on Tuesday. "The 11 staff will be made redundant."

Shop workers' union, Usdaw, has said it will seek the best possible redundancy terms for members who lose their jobs and will seek talks with the new owners over the future of the remaining businesses.

Huddersfield-based BTTF Ltd, which was formed to complete the buyout, has assured staff that it will not cut jobs at the stores it has taken over.

Paul Niklas, the new company's managing director, said: "Today marks a recommitment to the Kwik Save brand and its already strong local presence. We will, over time, be refreshing the store image whilst maintaining the existing offer of quality branded products at competitive prices. We will also be looking for opportunities to source local produce wherever possible, to bring local products direct to the local community."

Furniture retailer MFI, which has a store at Sanderson Way, Marton, is also set to cut jobs with a 'store by store' review of the business. It has not yet announced which stores are to be covered in the review.
