I am totally opposed to the Lancashire County Council plan to build a northern link road between the M6 and Heysham Docks, to be discussed by the planning committee next Monday.

There are 1,074 homes situated less than 200 meters away from the road and thousands of people will suffer from exhaust fumes, noise, vibration, and light pollution. It's also a very obtrusive route, in places level with the bedroom windows of residents.

The traffic between Morecambe and Lancaster is horrific but this road will not alleviate it. As a councillor for Torrisholme. I have heard many objections, and here are a few of the alternatives put forward.

Encourage people to switch from cars to foot, bike, bus or train.

Provide free school buses - £85 million pounds saved on the road would go a long way to pay for this and there is a marked improvement in the traffic during school holidays.

Greater use of rail, especially for certain types of freight to Heysham.

The Heysham-M6 link road would cost more than £85 million. By comparison Lancashire plans to spend only £24 million per year on all other transport across the entire county!

Cllr Eve Ashworth, Torrisholme.
