A MUM who lost her teenage son when he was knocked down by a car has launched a campaign to save other families from the same nightmare'.

Catrina Gale's son Michael was killed last February while has was walking on Coastal Road in Hest Bank on his way home from Ripley St Thomas school.

Now, one year on from the tragedy, Catrina is seeking traffic calming measures to make the busy road safer for pedestrians.

And she is urging locals to back her battle so that something positive can come out of her son's death.

She hopes the campaign will see Lancashire County Council place speed restrictions and safe crossing places on the road.

Says Mrs Gale: "The road is busy and since Michael's death we have become aware of just how dangerous it can be. As the parents of other children, we are concerned for their safety as well.

"There is no speed enforcement along the road and when we spoke to the county council they said the majority of motorists abide by the speed limit. But I have never seen anyone do speed enforcements along that road."

Mrs Gale and her husband Alan have three other children who have to cross the dangerous road daily to get to and from school.

"There are lots of children who have to do the same and we do not want another family to go through what we have and lose a child coming home from school.

"We are disappointed to be told that the criteria for a camera to be put up is four serious collisions or fatal accidents. As a parent who has lost a child to be told that there has to be three more fatalities is very sad.

"Other families should not have to go what we have gone through before something is done," she says.

Mrs Gale is urging anyone concerned about Coastal Road to write about their fears to the highway department at the county council or to send her an e-mail.

She will collate all the e-mails and present them to the county council. The email address to write to is saferoads@hotmail.co.uk.
