A group of 30 Chorley schoolchildren who won a fairytale trip to Denmark became TV stars when they were filmed during their visit.

The 10 and 11-year-olds from St Mary's Catholic Primary won the three-night stay in Copenhagen by creating a new twist on a Hans Christian Andersen story in a competition organised to mark the 200th anniversary of the famous author's birth.

The fertile imaginations of the children created The Rock Star's New Guitar, an adaptation of the Emperor's New Clothes, which beat off more than 1,150 schools to carry of first prize.

During the visit, courtesy of the tourist board, Visit Denmark, the class, pictured, travelled to Andersen's home town, Odense, to experience the culmination of the bicentennial celebrations. It was there where they were followed by a Danish TV crew covering the anniversary celebrations.

Pupil Pedro Monteiro, 11, said: "The Danish TV crew were waiting for us as we got off the bus and we were singing English Christmas carols.

"Later I was interviewed and they asked me about my favourite fairytale. It's the Emperor's New Clothes because it's very enjoyable and humorous.

"They also asked me about the differences between Denmark and the UK. I told them that the Danish drive on the right-hand side of the road and that the houses are very close together in Odense and Copenhagen."

Other highlights of the trip were a visit to Tivoli Gardens and Hans Christian Andersen's house. Nicole McGovern, 11, said: "It was great being in Odense on the very last day of the Hans Christian Andersen year. The city was very cosy and there were special Hans Christian Andersen light shows on many of the old buildings."
