A 43-YEAR-OLD Leyland police officer has appeared before Blackburn magistrates charged with causing death by dangerous driving when he was responding to an emergency call.
PC Philip Grover, a police officer for 24 years, was sent on bail to Preston Crown Court where he will answer the allegation that he caused the death of Vivian Roberts, 63, of Croston, by dangerous driving on January 6.
Mr Roberts, a divorced father of two grown-up children, suffered a fractured sternum when his Fiat Punto collided with the marked Vauxhall Astra driven by PC Grover. He was treated at the Royal Preston Hospital but died in February.
The incident was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. The findings of a later investigation were handed to the Crown Prosecution Service which advised that PC Grover be summonsed. PC Grover is currently suspended from driving a police vehicle.
