FOLLOWING my cycle accident recently I expressed my thanks to all for medical help, which was overwhelming.

During my subsequent hospital treatment, which was wonderful, I heard of the death of one cyclist with a fractured skull.

Also the death of another and then the injury of a 13-year-old cyclist involving four days in hospital.

As winter draws on I ask all cyclists "Have you taken enough precautions or are you so clever that it doesn't happen to you?"

Adequate lights, especially rear lights if you must cycle in the dark. I shall be investing in a better helmet and disc brakes.

And motorists, don't park on cycle lanes. Your selfishness increases the danger tremendously.

Accident statistics will tell you that most cycle fatalities occur to the very young and those over 60, but it can happen to anyone, anywhere so, get a hat and keep your head.
