DIY and gardening chain Homebase has re-submitted its planning application to build a superstore in the centre of Clitheroe.

The company wants to take over the Rectella site in Queensway and transform it into a superstore employing between 60 and 70 people.

The plans face stiff opposition from existing town centre traders who claim it will damage small businesses by taking away customers.

The original application was withdrawn in June due to "design and research problems" but was re-submitted last week.

It will go to a planning committee on November 22 at the earliest, though planning officers said it is more likely to be in December.

People objecting to the application have until November 4 to make comments to planning officers at Ribble Valley Borough Council.

The original plans were for a 3,000 square metre DIY store with an associated garden centre taking up 735 square metres.

The site, which would also have included provision for 115 car parking spaces, backs on to Clitheroe's Sainsbury's supermarket.

John Macholc, the planning officer in charge of the case, said: "The plans are roughly the same but Homebase have now given us the extra detail we needed, including details on retail trade impact."
