This is my reply to the letter, It's Better to Shop Elsewhere, Citizen August 24, from I Glover.

Chorley's market is not the best in the north west, but credit to the council for trying to improve shopping in Chorley.

Stall holders are tempted to change area for many different reasons, more economical rents, higher footfall, availability of undercover trading etc.

They also realise Chorley is not as populated as the surrounding towns of Bury, Wigan, Bolton and Preston.

As for the shops being too small and cramped, this is only the case in a small number of shops in the town centre.

There is ample room in most shops, and the staff are usually quite welcoming.

Perhaps this is because they are locals or maybe they have a desire to interact with people in the same manner that they wish to be treated.

I Glover states "most people have no manners". This is where this becomes personal.

Until about nine years ago, I had never been to Chorley.

I moved here from Bolton, knowing no one. I have spent the last six years being delivery driver in Chorley. In this time, I have realised I must count myself as a very lucky person, having to make deliveries to people who have become friends, and who have always had a welcoming smile on their faces upon my arrival.

Nothing has ever seemed to be too much trouble for Chorley folk. I have always found them to be very friendly, honest, kind, and caring, always with time to spend chatting.

When delivering to people's homes, quite often I would be asked if I would like a drink, even lunch on the odd occasion, which I nearly always declined because of time restraints.

Because I had the 'Chorley run', I was the envy of 50 or so drivers, so what does that tell you about Chorley folk!

I no longer deliver around Chorley, and I'll miss the folk I've had the pleasure to befriend.

Perhaps, I Glover, you should take a moment to get to know a few more Chorley folk, and also the town centre.

As they say in Bowton, " There's nowt like gradely folk" ! And Chorley's full of 'em!

Darren
