USERS of the unofficial Leigh Centurions fans forum www.leythers.co.uk have launched a "Safety in Rugby" appeal.

The aim is to make sure every junior rugby player in the area has access to, and the use of, a protective headguard.

This follows the recent news of Johnny Lomax from Wigan, who had to have brain surgery after an unfortunate clash of heads in a school match.

The 'SIR' appeal has the backing of the Leigh Sports Foundation, and the founders of the appeal have already spoken at a Leigh Miners Rangers committee meeting, where they gained the full support of the members present.

Suppliers have also offered competitive prices for the supply of the equipment.

A spokesperson for the appeal said: "A headguard costs around £30 and some parents simply cannot afford to lay this out every couple of years as the child grows.

"Our aim is to make sure young players are adequately protected, right up to Under 16's level, starting initially with Leigh Miners Rangers and Leigh East, then if we are successful, Leigh and Tyldesley Rugby Union clubs, and possibly the schools.

"If we can prevent even one similar incident occurring, then it will have been worth it. Who knows, if we can get other fans forums on board, we could spread into a wider area with the appeal."

Current fundraising ideas include a bucket collection at a Leigh Centurions Super League home game, a bag-packing and collection session at one of the superstores, stalls on car boot sales, fun days, a raffle, and a balloon race.

The appeal would like to hear from individuals, organizations or businesses who feel they can help with this appeal, by way of sponsorship, donations or ideas. They can be contacted by e-mail at safety_in_rugby@hotmail.co.uk
