A GROUP of gipsies have set up camp on a piece of council-owned land in Oswaldtwistle.

The group moved onto the land just a day after gipsies were forced to leave an illegal campsite in the Huncoat area.

And Hyndburn council are planning to start legal moves to have the dozen caravans moved off the former works depot in Heys Lane. It is believed the travellers moved onto the empty land after removing a padlocked gate blocking the entrance.

The land has been vacant for over two years and Hyndburn council is hoping to sell the former depot.

John Davey, of Hyndburn council's environmental health department said: "We have been informed about the gipsies moving onto this site, and will be making inquiries about the current situation.

"If they are trespassing, then we will take legal measures to have them removed as soon as possible."
