THE Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society, which runs the popular Royal Lancashire Show, is celebrating a financially successful year.

The show, held at Astley Park, Chorley, over three hot summer days, was a record for the society, taking in receipts of £238,563.

However, the costs of staging the show meant profits were only £66,138 and the net operating surplus for the society last year was £24,104, compared with £14,559 in 1994.

The society's investments at the end of September were worth around £180,000, according to the annual report.

The society, which dates back to 1767, aims to promote the science and practice of agriculture and horticulture, as well as encouraging countryside-based crafts, industries, sports and pastimes.

Brewers Daniel Thwaites have agreed to increase their sponsorship of the show and support it for the next two years.

The next Royal Lancashire Show will be held at Astley Park on July 26, 27 and 28.
