AN alleged Mafia suspect facing extradition to Italy was on his way back to Darwen today after being granted bail by the High Court.

Guiseppe Cavallo, 52, dubbed the "Clogfather", of Higher Perry Street, was committed in custody by Bow Street magistrates on December 20 when he was recommended for extradition.

But Mr Justice Morison, sitting in London, yesterday allowed conditional bail with sureties totalling £65,000, while Cavallo, a pizza chef, waits for an appeal.

He must live at his home address, keep a curfew, report twice daily to Darwen police station and must not apply for any travel documents. He was due to be released from Belmarsh Prison today.

Bow Street Court heard he had more than seven years of prison to serve in Italy for receiving stolen goods, fraud, possessing firearms, ammunition and dynamite, abducting two prison guards and shooting two other guards. The crimes were committed over ten years, beginning in 1971.
