FORMER East Lancashire MP Sir David Trippier has been appointed Honorary Colonel of the Royal Marines Reserve in Merseyside.

Sir David, 49, was Rossendale and Darwen MP between 1979 and 1992 before he was ousted by Labour's Janet Anderson.

The Royal Marines Reserve are based in Birkenhead and have detachments in Rochdale and Birmingham. Sir David was educated at Bury Grammar School and was later commissioned as an officer in the Royal Marines Reserve where he served for 17 years.

In 1970, he qualified as a parachutist at RAF Abingdon and also qualified as a Company Commander at the School of Infantry at Warminster.

He has served with the 40 Commando Royal Marines in Singapore and Malaysia, 41 Commando in Malta and the 3rd Commando Brigade in Norway. He was knighted in 1992.
