GAINSBOROUGH almost put Bamber Bridge out of the picture on Saturday.

After a lay-off of three weeks during the freezing weather, Bridge returned to Irongate with a seven-point lead at the top of the Unibond League.

But it was mid-table Gainsborough who took the initiative and the lead within 20 minutes with Mark Smith beating Steve Berryman at the second attempt.

With the wind affecting play, both sides battled hard to produce decent football and in one of the more sparkling moments Wayne Maddock equalised for Bridge, just after the hour.

Maddock, signed recently from Morecambe, stepped in for the suspended Jez Baldwin.

Showing well developed skills in defence and at times in attack, the Irongate crowd will no doubt see more of their new recruit.

On Saturday (January 13) Bamber Bridge make the long journey to Blyth Spartans.
