NOW that plans for the M62 Relief Road have been scrapped local MP David Sumberg is to urge the Roads Minister to make sure the blighted housing areas are restored to their former status as soon as possible. "Local residents have already suffered a great deal," he said.

"It is only right that the restoration of their neighbourhood should be a matter of the highest priority."

To make sure it is a priority he wants to see a Council delegation which includes Bury's director of housing to see the Roads Minister as soon as possible.

"All aspects of this problem can then be dealt with promptly and efficiently," he argued.

There are four main points which Mr Sumberg would like the Minister to address.

One is the possibility of tenants who are occupying blighted houses being given the right to buy them at a reasonable discount.

Another is to minimise the effect on the local housing market by selling empty properties in phases.

A third is the need to keep the number of empty houses to a minimum and to ensure they are maintained to a high standard, and vandal-proofed.

Finally Mr Sumberg would like to see additional assistance given to Bury Council so that they can give appropriate housing advice and help to tenants of blighted houses when they reach the end of their existing tenancies.

Said Mr Sumberg: "This is not a party political issue but one which must be dealt with by all concerned in a sensible, practical and responsible manner.

"That is why I am calling for a Council delegation to see the Minister, and why I shall do all I can to ensure a successful outcome."
