JYL Oldham and her team of husky dogs never get snowed in.

In fact, they love the winter weather, and next week they're heading north for Scotland's icy climate.

Kali, Krista and Karel will be pulling 30-year-old Jyl's sled in the Aviemore Rally, the biggest sled-dog competition in the UK.

They're in for an exciting adventure. The race, sponsored by Spillers Winalot and Siberian Husky Club, is run over a dramatic trail through the Glenmore forest, and is set against a traditional Scottish backdrop of ice-capped mountains and snow.

The skill, timing and fitness of Jyl and her dogs will be pushed to the limit as they compete against hundreds of other teams in pursuit of the weekend's fastest time.

If the weather's right, it will be a real treat for the dogs, which, with two coats of hair and webbed feet, are perfectly adapted to the snow. They'll be paw-deep in snow, and may even have time for roll between races.

Jyl, who is busy preparing for the race at her Roughlee home, told the Citizen: "I run three dogs in the four-dog class, and they manage to compete, although Kali and Krista are getting a bit old.

"Karel is three, so I'm hoping she'll have a litter soon. Most owners are constantly bringing new blood into competition.

"I've been racing for a few years now. There should be snow when we go up to Scotland, but if not we'll have to use a rig with wheels.

"That's what I use for practice." JYL Oldham and her team of husky dogs (pictured) never get snowed in.
