BURNLEY toppled runaway Pontins League Division Two leaders Middlesbrough with a splendid victory at Hartlepool last night.

Middlesbrough boasted several stars with Premiership experience but the Clarets dominated long periods of the game.

Liam Robinson struck Burnley into the lead a minute before half time before Bolivian international Jamie Moreno levelled the scores in the 49th minute. But Burnley hit back and John Francis inflicted Middlesbrough's first home defeat of the season mid-way through the second half.

Francis' volley gave goalkeeper Allan Miller no chance after defender Alan White could only head clear a Ted McMinn corner to Francis.

"It was without doubt our best performance of the season and we played excellent football," said coach Harry Wilson.

The Burnley side was: Russell, Parkinson (Taylor), Dowell, Adams, Davies, Cox, Francis, Borland, Peel, Robinson, McMinn.
