A FAST-growing computer firm has joined forces with training experts to tackle skill shortages.

The Burnley-based Granville Technology Group has almost tripled its workforce to 320 in the past two years.

But it has frequently been faced with problems finding suitable applicants from East Lancashire.

The manufacturing and sales firm has linked up with Burnley ITeC to offer modern apprenticehips for computer technicians.

Staff on the scheme will train for a level three National Vocational Qualification. A total of 12 workers will receive on-the-job experience while returning to the classroom for job-related training.

"Our recent recruitment problems could have potentially limited the growth of the company," said Ian Wilson, Granville's human resources administration and development officer. "The link with Burnley ITeC will give local workers important technology skills and help us maintain our position as one of Lancashire's fastest developing firms."

Burnley ITeC's training supervisor Rachel Butterworth added: "Industry can play a major role in the development of the workforce and this can be realised through the partnership of ELTEC, Granville and Burnley ITeC under the XTEND Modern Apprenticehip initiative.

"Granville Technology will offer valuable workplace training backed up with classroom tuition from our lecturers who have expertise in a diverse range of information technology skills."
