STAFF at an animal sanctuary are taking part in a nationwide demonstration against the veal trade.

Workers at the RSPCA shelter in Altham will light a candle to show their opposition to shipping veal calves across Europe in crates.

Hyndburn's mayor Coun Jean Battle has agreed to be a guest at the event.

And at the same time, RSPCA centres across the country will be holding similar ceremonies on Tuesday, January 23.

A ceremony, attended by a national celebrity and politicians, will be staged outside the Royal Society of Arts in London.

The giant candle will then be taken to the RSPCA headquarters in the capital.

The local committee of the charity is also backing the campaign.

Norma Ashton, the manager of Altham animal shelter, said: "Anything that we can do to help stop the veal crate trade in Europe can only be for the good."
