YOUNG telephone tricksters are robbing old people in Atherton.

This week, police warned elderly people to be on their guard against everyone calling at their doors, even the baby-faced criminals.

Young boys have been calling on elderly people asking for 10p change to use in a telephone call-box. When women have got their purses, the youngsters have made a grab for them and run off. They are even suspected of breaking into elderly person's homes while they are out.

Ch Insp Steve Westcott warned elderly people not to open their doors to strangers.

"It's a sad reflection on our times but that also applies to young children who are not beyond pulling confidence tricks."

Mr Westcott stressed that people should ask for identification when they do open the door.
