HUNDREDS of people in Preston have responded to police appeals for help in solving the horrific rape of a 12-year-old schoolgirl - but the brutal rapist is still at large.

An appeal was made to spectators at Preston North End on Tuesday night asking for vital information to help them capture the rapist.

Police have staged a reconstruction of the attack, which happened last Sunday on wasteland off Manchester Road, and a photofit of the rapist has been circulated around the town. As a result detectives say they have 300 leads to follow up.

More than 60 police are working on the case, including Det Insp Stuart Kirby from Lancaster Division, a specialist in criminal profiling.

Detective Chief Inspector Herd who is coordinating the inquiry, said: "There has been a significant response from the public and as a result, the inquiry has gained momentum"

The victim is currently receiving professional help. DC Sue Cawley who interviewed her, said the she was suffering sleepless nights and was afraid to go out or answer the door.

She said: "We must get hold of this man as soon as possible for peace of mind for the girl and her family. He could be very dangerous and could strike again." Anyone who information should call Preston CID on 203203.

The rapist was white, 20-35 years old, of medium build, clean shaven with short dark hair. he wore a brown leather zipped jacket, jeans and a white T-shirt. he smelled of alcohol and aftershave and was smoking a hand rolled cigarette.
