LANCASHIRE school children will soon be learning all about their natural environment at a new Field Study Centre in Penwortham.

Lancashire Wildlife Trust (LWT) is transforming the Penwortham Sub-Station at Howick Cross into an environmental oasis for youngsters.

The National Grid and local conservation groups are helping to develop the site with a £4,500 local grant from the Department of the Environment for plants, tools and equipment.

LWT education officer Chris Whitehead said: "It's like a demolition site at the moment but we're aiming to make it into a model school environment.

"Right next to the site is neighbouring farmland and mature woodland. We will be working with local farmers to improve the education of youngsters in agriculture."

The Centre - which will serve schools and local environmental groups - is only the tenth such Centre in the country and the first in the North West.

So far it has cost around £35,000, but money is still needed to complete the project.

LWT has approached local councils, businesses and trusts for cash and materials to finish the job.
