LANCASHIRE League chiefs are ready to wage war on slow over-rates.

Chairman Peter Westwell highlighted the issue as a priority at last night's league annual general meeting.

Clubs were asked to consider a national initiative to allow the side batting first the maximum overs, but restrict the chasing side to the number of overs they bowled within a set first innings time limit.

Another suggestion was to set aside a portion of sponsorship funds for sides meeting over-rate targets.

Mr Westwell, who intends to step down after this year, said: "It is our worst point and something we must tackle." League minds will also be focused on opposing the proposed county "super" league with a top level national meeting planned for March.

Mr Westwell also suggested clubs should approach their MPs in an effort to secure grants from the Cricket Foundation.

He added: "I don't think we get enough of a shout. We should let MPs know how much we do for the whole area.

"And to get money from the foundation we must adopt schools."

The league is looking for a new sponsor to take over with the Marsden Building Society entering their final year.
