A COMPANY has been ordered to pay £3,500 following an accident in which an employee received two fractures to the skull after his head was crushed between a reversing vehicle and a loading bay wall in September last year.

Autobar Ltd of Millfield Lane on Haydock Industrial Estate were taken to court after an investigation by St Helens Council's Environmental Health.

The company pleaded guilty to two offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, admitting that there was an absence of a safe system of work for the activities involved in the reversing and guiding of vehicles to the loading bays which were fitted with dock levelling devices.

The company also pleaded guilty with regard to the lack of sufficient instruction/training for employees engaged in the operations associated with the recovering of vehicles to the dock level bays. The company was fined £2,000 and £500 for each offence respectively, and was ordered to pay costs of £1,000.
