RUMOURS that plans are afoot to resurrect the M62 relief road through Prestwich and Whitefield, in Bury, have been firmly scotched by Bury South MP David Sumberg. He has confirmed that the Roads Minister has agreed to his request that steps should be taken to ensure that no one should be left in any doubt that the scheme has been cancelled.

The MP sought written clarification from the Minister because, he says, constituents had suffered when the threat of the motorway was a real possibility.

He now wanted to make it clear there is not a shred of justification for fears that the plans may be revived.

He has also persuaded the Minister to meet a council delegation so that a firm policy can be established about the disposal of empty properties in the area.

He says that based on an extensive survey of local opinion he feels a mixed housing approach should be opted for, with some being rented by a reputable housing association and some returned to owner occupation.

"However, it is essential that the Minister and the local council work together on this matter so that the necessary action to restore the area to its former status can be effected without delay," declared the MP.
