CURRENTLY studying creative writing at Peel College, young Denise Collard is researching for a book to be based on her grand-parents who were Frank and Connie Woods.

So Denise, who lives on Burns Avenue in Bury, needs to know as much about them as possible.

Before he was married Frank Woods lived on Somerset Drive, and his bride-to-be Connie Barrow was at 14 Denton Street.

Frank worked at Redmans in Bury's indoor market, and the family still have a company letter guaranteeing that his position would still be open for him when he returned from the war.

But alas he didn't return. He was called up in 1939, and reported killed in action in 1944.

Says Denise: "When grandfather died my mum was just four years old.

"My nan never remarried after his death, but unfortunately she never discussed how they met, or how life was for them in that era.

"I would like to find out also what kind of youngsters they were."

Before the war Connie had a millinery shop - Connie's - on Old Moorgate.

Denise would also like information about that, and about school life in Bury before the second world war. If you have any information write to The Editor, Bury Journal, 10 Bolton Street, Bury BL9 0LQ, and we'll pass it on to Denise.
