1/4orksop Town 0 Lancaster City 2 LANCASTER are back at their best if Saturday's brilliant victory at Worksop on Saturday is anything to go by. City's dependable defenders kept a tight reign of the league's leading scorers while at the other end, Stuart Diggle, Peter Borrowdale and Mark Shirley gave Worksop's defence the runaround. The game got off to a flying start with City taking the lead in the opening minute. A neat interchange of passes created space for Shirley and his pass across the six yard box was turned into his own net by David Nunn.

Worksop were determined to show how they have scored so many goals, particularly at home, and pushed forward looking for an equaliser with Danny Campbell causing the most problems.

They almost equalised when a goalmouth scramble resulted in Mark Thornley just managing to get hold off a Mark Rookyard shot before the ball crossed the line.

City started the second half looking to kill the game off but found Worksop 'keeper Jamie Holmshaw in good form as he saved good efforts from Diggle and Jay Flannery and then turned a Borrowdale shot over the bar.

The decisive second goal eventually came after 69 minutes. Dave Sharples collected the ball in midfield and played a superb pass forward for Shirley to race on to and take into the penalty area.

The 'keeper found Shirley's cross too hot to handle and Borrowdale reacted quickest to prod the ball over the line from a narrow angle.

Worksop almost pulled a goal back soon afterwards when Johnny Clark finally broke clear of his marker and fired a shot that came back off the crossbar. From the resulting corner, Mark Thornley made an excellent save to keep out a header from Darren Brookes.

This was to be the last threat Worksop had to offer and City played out time knocking the ball about with the confidence of a side extending their unbeaten league run to 14 games. How they lined up: Thornley, Key, Stimpson, Eatough, Byron, Shirley, Trainor, Sharples, Diggle, Borrowdale, Flannery.

Subs: Curwen, Whittaker, Chilton.
