LOCAL History officer Tony Ashcroft of Leigh Library and Archivist Nicholas Webb from Leigh Town Hall will be signing copies of their new book 'Around Leigh' at the library's new local history service point on Tuesday (April 2) at 2.30pm.

It will also be the official launch of the new book which contains over 200 old photographs from the council collection.

The £8.99 book pictures local at play, in public life and in private thought, and include a Home Guard inspection in 1940, the old turkish baths, the old market, the opening of Firs Park in 1921 and shots of Leigh's first and last mayors, John Fairclough and Peter Fazackerly.

Alastair Gillies, Heritage Services manager, said: "This is a book which will surely appeal to many local people. The photos have rarely been seen before, and the quality is excellent.

"I am also please that we have been able to open a local history service point in the library. Local studies have become increasingly popular and I am sure this will be a well used facility."
