A POLICE crackdown on crackheads has proved successful in the war against drugs on the streets.

At the time of going to press, Blackburn Police had arrested nine suspects for possessing drugs after several dawn raids as part of Operation Weed.

The CID pro-active drug team recovered a whole host of illegal substances including amphetamines, heroin and ecstasy as well as stolen furniture and jewellery.

The arrested suspects have been charged or released on police bail.

"We'd call it a positive result," declared Sergeant Peter Broome who led one of the teams involved in the operation. "You never know what you're going to find but it's the culmination of weeks of preparation and we're committed to doing a thorough job."

During the three-day operation, Sergeant Broome and his team arrived at an one address in Mill Hill to search for drugs.

The occupants were soundly asleep when the team burst through a front door to serve their search warrant.

Officers scoured the premises for half-an-hour before finding a suspect package which was sent to forensic scientists for analysis.

"We're taking away the usual drug dealing paraphernalia as well such as the pipe bong, quick seal bags and scales for evidence," explained Sergeant Broome as another officer slapped the handcuffs on a suspect.
