BEHIND the success of the Open for Learning Centre based at Unsworth Library in Bury, Christine Almond is enjoying a fairytale ending of her own.

Christine has achieved the perfect double. Not only has she earned the rare honour of being made a Chartered Librarian through the Library Association but at the same time she has been promoted to Assistant Librarian at the busy Radcliffe Library.

To become a librarian Christine initially took a degree in history and then went on to do a post-graduate course in Library and Information Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Then she was given the option of doing a Chartered Professional Development Report which can be undertaken over one, two or five years.

She opted for the two year period because she was based at Unsworth Library and was responsible for the Open for Learning initiative around which she based her report.

Despite her promotion Christine will continue to be responsible for the Open for Learning Centre membership of which entitles individuals to use the space, equipment and materials set aside at Unsworth.

Working with the Community Education Service, tutorial advice and support is available in a range of subjects which include computer operations and programming.

Bury Metro's Leisure Services Department Director Dr. Graham Nicholson, who presented Christine with her Chartership said "Christine has worked extremely hard and as a result has earned an award which is highly coveted in the library world. While maintaining her role at Unsworth. She will now have the additional responsibility of ensuring that Radcliffe Library runs smoothly and continues to offer the community service which has made it extremely popular with local people."
