FURIOUS Blackburn Rovers fans today ripped The Sun to shreds over its coverage of the Alan Shearer saga.

And Ewood fans have launched a boycott of the paper in the wake of its scare stories over Alan Shearer's non-existent 'move' to Manchester United.

Even though Shearer himself and the rest of the club have told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph that he is staying at Ewood Park, The Sun went ahead with a story claiming he had already signed a £19 million swap deal with the Premiership champions.

Gary Bowers, vice-chairman of the 200-strong Ewood Blues Independent Supporters Club, said all fans should stop buying The Sun.

The supporters club is also holding a meeting to decide further action, including having T-shirts printed and organising a public "hands off our Al" demonstration in Blackburn centre.

"My phone hasn't stopped ringing since the Sun story with people wanting to know what we are going to do about it," said Gary, who even moved to Ewood to be nearer his beloved team.

"The Sun has rubbished us for years and this was the last straw. They are just making it up and they are upsetting the fans. We are only a small town but let's make a big noise."

Gary admitted that all Rovers fans would be "totally devastated" if the Euro 96 top scorer left Ewood Park.

"These days kids round here learn to say Shearer before they say mum and dad," he joked.

But he added: "He does not need to leave Blackburn, with all the stars that we have and the ambition we have."

Blackburn Rovers FC is also angry with The Sun over its coverage and has instructed its lawyers to look at a possible claim for damages.
