Sightings in the Rossendale, Todmorden, Burnley, Nelson and Colne Area:

Birds - Golden plover (Pendle just above Barley), reed warbler (Foulridge), ten herons seen together (Black Moss, Barley), merlin (Gorple), dipper (Worsthorne).

Mammals - Roe deer (Catlow Bottoms), mink (Cliviger), water vole (Hurstwood).

Insects - Orange Tip butterfly (male and female seen at Roughlee - the wings of the male have orange tips but the female has black tips), wood wasp (Black Moss, Barley).

Flowers - Hawthorn blossom now losing its spring freshness as the high winds of last Friday and Saturday damaged their delicate blooms.

Sightings in the Blackburn, Darwen and Accrington areas:

Birds - Kingfisher (Leeds to Liverpool canal near Oswaldtwistle), peregrine (Darwen), redstart, tree pipit, wood warbler (Roddlesworth).

Mammals - Hare (Pleasington), short-tailed field vole (Darwen Moor), "wild" ferret (Samlesbury).

Insects - Peacock, small white, meadow brown butterflies (all on the banks of the Darwen near Witton Park), ladybirds feeding on dog rose. Ladybirds eat green fly (near Cherry Tree).

Flowers - Self heal, red campion, enchanters nightshade, germander and wood speedwell, con-wheat (White Coppice).

Sightings in the Ribble Valley area:

Birds - Yellow wagtail (Sawley), ring ouzel (Waddington), hen harrier (Dunsop Bridge), goldfinch (Billington), dotterel (Pendle Hill), skylark, meadow pipit, wheatear (Downham).

Mammals - Sika deer (Bolton-by-Bowland), badger, otter (in the Gisburn area), hedgehog (Whalley).

Insects - Red Admiral, peacock butterflies (Brungerley), common wasp biting at rotting timber. Waspes chew wood to make paper to build nests (Pendleton).

Flowers - Brookline, water forget-me-knot, monkey flower, watercress, water mint, flat iris (Downham), marjoram, marsh orchid (Brungerley).
