GOAL-KING Paul Barnes was quids in after his remarkable five-star show against Stockport County.

Burnley's £375,000 record signing netted all FIVE goals in Burnley's 5-2 thumping of Stockport County.

And then he revealed he had backed himself with £20 to score the first goal-at 7-2!

"I had £20 on myself to score the first goal but I never imagined going on to hit five," he said.

"It is just superb. Everything seemed to drop for me. I was even expecting one to go in off the back of my head.

"I've scored four before and had four or five hat-tricks. But five is very special.

"That ranks up there with my best times in football.

"To open your account with a new club with five goals was superb.

"It was a weight off my shoulders to score but the boss and the fans have been very patient. I hope they enjoyed those goals as much as I did. "I was really pleased for them because they've been great with me since I arrived.

"They were behind me all the way and now I've shown them that I can hit the back of the net."

Barnes's goal-scoring feat meant he was the first Burnley player to score five in a league game for 31 years.

Andy Lochhead netted five in a 6-2 victory over Chelsea at Turf Moor in April 1965.

Barnes added: "It was funny because everybody kept saying before the match that I'd break my duck against Stockport.

"The only pressure I felt was what I had put on myself.

"But I'm a confident lad and the most important thing is that we won the game.

"We needed this performance after a few sticky results. It was just nice that it was me scoring the goals."

Barnes joked: "I just hope somebody gives me a video of the match now. I'd like to see the goals again."

Manager Adrian Heath added: "It was a very special performance from Paul Barnes. "I have absolutely no doubt that he will score plenty of goals and this is a day he will remember for the rest of his life."

Heath also praised the contribution of Vince Overson.

He returned to the side in place of the axed Jamie Hoyland for only his second game in nine months.

"Vince Overson's contribution was a remarkable one when you consider how little football he has played this year," added the boss.

"He is a natural leader and he'll be as important a member as anyone on the Turf Moor staff this season.

"The result was especially pleasing, coming after a couple of disappointing displays.

"There were a few frank exchanges with the players this week. I'm pleased the players responded with a performance like that."

Burnley's A team lost 2-1 to Everton at Gawthorpe. Tom Mutton was the scorer. The B team lost went down 1-0 at Rochdale.
