REGARDING the recent complaints and criticism concerning traffic jams, notorious blackspots, traffic-calming measures and general chaos in and around Blackburn, surely, it must be obvious by now that the ultimate plan is to have a traffic-free centre.

By using the above methods, the authorities hope to 'persuade' motorists away from Blackburn - no motorists, no problem. It has certainly worked on me. I have changed my bank to an out-of-town bank and only shop in Blackburn when absolutely forced to. However, unfortunately, I do have to work in Blackburn and choose to cycle there most days. But it seems that Blackburn Council does not want cyclists either. They are slowly using silly cycle lanes, obstacles and restrictions to 'persuade' us away from Blackburn.

All this is despite a government initiative to provide better cycling conditions by planning for cyclists in any road improvement scheme, and they are willing to pay towards the costs.

So, come on, Blackburn Council, do the right thing for once. Listen to Robin Field (LET, November 1) and allow cyclists use of the bus lanes through the Boulevard.

Anything that takes us away from the dreaded Church Street has got to be good.
