HAVING four young children, I welcome the proposals to reduce the speed of vehicles outside my home in Rishton. Recently, one of my children, aged five, was nearly hit by a car when his football rolled into the road. The car skidded a considerable distance before stopping. Thankfully, no accident took place.

Recently, you have published articles criticising traffic calming measures and in one of them (LET, November 4) Mr Alan Lightbown Whalley described the measures proposed by Hyndburn Borough Council and "an obsession bordering on paranoia."

There is a big difference between a person, (especially a young child) being hit by a car at 15-20 mph than at 30mph-plus.

If the motorist had been travelling slowly over speed restrictions then it is unlikely that a lengthy skid would have taken place. If Mr Lightbown Whalley does not want road humps where he lives on the estate, fair enough. I want them outside my house.

No proposed traffic-calming measures receive unanimous support, however both myself and my family support the measures that the Council is taking and hope that they are implemented as soon as possible. It may well prevent death or serious injury and will make living in this area slightly less worrying for parents with young children.
