AN engineering firm has been honoured for its energy saving efforts.
Silicone Engineering of Blackburn was highly commended in the Norweb Business Energy Awards after installing new equipment to improve its performance.
The company, based at Greenbank Business Park, manufactures cellular silicone rubber sponges and was looking to speed up the oven-cure stage of the production process to support an expansion programme.
The original line was extruding the raw sponge compound up to five times faster than it was curing it and the company wanted to find a way of curing at the extrusion line.
A new self-contained line incorporating electric infra red heaters for curing was installed in a £15,000 investment programme which has paid for itself within a year through reduced energy consumption and labour costs
