A ROAD safety campaigner has called for drivers to take more care after emergency vehicles were involved in two serious accidents in three days. In one case two police cars collided with each other.

Preston Councillor Jean Al-Serraj said the incidents, which occurred within a mile of each other on Blackpool Road and left five people needing hospital treatment, highlighted the need for care on our hectic highways.

Councillor Al-Serraj, chair of the Road Safety Sub-Committee, said: "I think where it's not a case of life and death, emergency services could be a bit more cautious. There's a need for all round caution."

She spoke after hearing about two police cars which collided as they responded to the same emergency call. The crash happened at Blackpool Road and Ribbleton Avenue and left three officers suffering whiplash and broken limbs.

Acting Chief Inspector Warren Turner said: "There will be a full investigation into how the accident occurred."

But Councillor Al-Serraj said: "It should never happen. It's something that we don't want to see repeated."

Just down the road from there a fire engine collided with a car near Deepdale Retail Park on Monday (February 10) at 2.10pm.

Two women in the car were taken to hospital after members of the fire crew - who weren't injured - cut them free. Fire Brigade Assistant Divisional Officer David Paton said: "It was an unusual case, fate is like that. The police are investigating it."
