MORE than 1,000 people have signed a petition demanding a council extends a multi-million pounds housing action to cover the whole of Daneshouse in Burnley.

Over 50 attended a protest meeting last night and formed an action committee to pressure the council into widening the improvement scheme to include their homes.

They say the Labour-controlled authority has broken promises and dashed the hopes of residents for a better future.

The petition claims the council promised help for the whole area and expresses deep anxiety, disgust and anger over being excluded.

The petition will be handed to the mayor before the full meeting of the council next week.

Labour chiefs say they have never promised to carry out a single scheme throughout Daneshouse - the poorest area of town.

Reports showed this would cost more than £40 million and was simply not feasible.

Original plans to spend up to £5 million on some 500 homes in Daneshouse were extended last year to include around 200 houses in adjoining Stoneyholme, following protests.

Now the plan is to declare a renewal area covering 600 private homes; 84 new build and 33 refurbished housing association dwellings and 41 houses owned by the local authority - a total of 767 properties.
