St Helens Town 2 Burscough 0

St Helens Town 4 Mossley 3 FOURTEEN goals from their last four home games is Town's impressive record from four straight wins.

But last week's effort against two of the leagues high flyers was something special.

Last Wednesday, form team Burscough came to Hoghton Road boasting an impressive sequence but once again Town upset the Linnets' bandwagon and completed the double over the Victoria Park outfit.

Honours were even until the 40th minute dismissal of Burscough's Darren Saint and before the Linnets could re-organise, Town struck with a neat opportunist goal from Glenn Walker.

After the interval Town continued to press home their advantage and when Steve Pennington made it 2-0 on 55 minutes by rounding Blasberry and cutting the ball home, the game and the points were firmly in a determined Town's pocket.

On Saturday Town had the daunting task of facing a Mossley side who are only two rounds from a Wembley FA Vase final and who very early in the season, handed Town a seven-goal mauling at Seel Street.

The game opened in tame fashion but gradually gained momentum to become a mini-classic with the second half producing some real quality goals. Terry Hoey had given Town a fragile interval lead in the 24th minute after Walker's tenacity but that could have easily been overturned had Cranes composure been better as Mossley frequently beat the offside trap.

After the break, however, Town were caught cold enabling the visitors to sweep into a 2-1 lead as firstly Tim Crane lobbed home then Steve Jordan swivelled to find the bottom corner in the 52nd minute.

At this point things did not look good at all for St Helens but slowly the smouldering embers burst into a raging flame and they hit back in classic style with Steve Pennington latching onto Hills sweet pass to equalise in the 66th minute.

This produced a golden spell of three goals in nine minutes with the pick of the bunch coming in the 70th minute when King deceived everyone with a disguised chip when a shot looked certain and Glenn Walker pivoted to unleash a scorching volley past keeper Bates who barely saw it.

Town could now do no wrong and following a foul on King near the corner flag, Walker's delivery was perfect for Ian Street to glance home a neat header with 16 minutes left. Town's Glen Walker crowned an eventful afternoon's work by turning the low cross into his own net in trying to prevent Bates a simple chance.

Following last weeks fine boost Town are on the road again and on Saturday travel to Cumbria to face Penrith (3pm). Then on Wednesday February 19, Maine Road come to Hoghton Road (7.30).
