CREATIVE youngsters at a Whiston school are shedding new light on science lessons - thanks to a dazzling computer-generated light show which they have designed themselves.

Talented ten-year-olds at Southmead Primary School in Lickers Lane designed the unique miniature display of control technology as part of a science project all about light which stretched both technical and practical skills, as well as their ability to work in teams.

Over a five-week period the pupils worked on their own separate parts of the computerized display, which included light-sensitive devices, circuitry and a control board which incorporated three separate computers.

The official 'switch on' was performed by Councillor George Howard, Deputy Mayor of Knowsley. And visiting OFSTED inspector Richard Fye, who saw the students in the process of creating the display, even asked if he could return to witness its completion!

Proud headteacher Mike Dalton said: "The pupils have worked really hard on this project and have produced something really special and creative. It is befitting that SATRO (Science And Technology Regional Organisation) have awarded them a CREST award for outstanding work in the field."
