Heysham Atoms 32 Leigh East 28
HEYSHAM Atoms recorded a tremendous BNFL National Cup victory against a side four divisions above them on Saturday.
The biggest game ever seen at Trimpell saw a classy Leigh East launch straight into attack and score a converted try. At 22-4 up just after half time, the National Conference League side looked composed and on course for victory but then the Atoms staged a remarkable fightback.
In the first half, Heysham's Carl Butler scored an outstanding try, chipping the defenders and beating the full back, but he had to leave the field shortly afterwards due to injury to be replaced by his brother, Gary.
The Atoms maintained their shape and started to turn the game around. Brian Gregory scored his first try of the season which boosted confidence and Heysham began to win more possession and let loose their backs. Livingstone scored two tries, Helliwell beat a defender to score under the post and a captain's try from Mark Townsend ensured a Hollywood style climax to this amazing encounter.
Team: Cambridge, Helliwell, Weed, Fitzpatrick, Bland, Flanagan, Pinnington, Townsend, Helme, Livingstone, Gregory, Spenceley, C Butley, G Butler, Crow, Bundy, Harrison.
