THERE has been a massive increase in the number of mature students over the years but none fit that category better than Margo Fleming from Hest Bank. At 90-years-old, Margo is living proof that you are never too old to learn and last week she celebrated her birthday with tutors and friends from the Adult College where she has been a student since 1973. Margo came to the district with her husband, Bill, 30 years ago but she found herself with time on her hands after Bill died and adult education helped her through her grief.

She explains: "Adult education brought me solace from grief and relief from family problems, plus a renewed interest in life."

"It's no exaggeration to say that adult education saved my life. Over the years I've delighted in the warm atmosphere, found many interests, made lots of friends, kept myself fit and had lots of fun - none of these are available on the National Health!"

With a lifelong interest in literature and drama in particular, she has enjoyed many courses over the years, including Open College and A Levels as well as many non-exam courses. She studied at St Leonard's House back in 1973 and moved with the Adult College to the White Cross six years ago.

On top of her courses in yoga and French, Margo has kept herself busy walking with the Ramblers Association and performing with the Wordspinners, presenting themed entertainment in various community venues.

Said College Principal, Peter Garrod: "We believe her to be one of the students with the longest record of continuous attendance at adult education classes."
