A MORECAMBE schoolboy used his knowledge of fire safety which he learnt at school to save his family from a blaze at their home. Frazer Henderson, 13, sprung into action after his he woke up in the early hours of Sunday morning to find his electric blanket had caught fire and was burning his feet. He raced to his mum's room after deliberately shutting his bedroom door and helped alert his nine-year-old sister Michelle and his brother Stuart who were fast asleep. Firefighters have praised Fraser's initiative which helped prevent the fire from spreading. Frazer, a pupil at Morecambe High School, told the Citizen what happened.

He said: "I was really tired that night and fell asleep with my electric blanket on. I woke up at about 4.30am and the blanket was smouldering and burning my feet. I could not see very well and my mouth was full of smoke. The fire was getting out of hand and I woke my mum up. The fire burnt the blanket, the sheets and mattress. I shut my bedroom door and got out. While mum called the fire brigade I woke my brother and sister up. We were all very lucky," added Frazer.

Frazer, of Westminister Road, explained how firefighters had given a talk about fire safety at school. Divisional officer John Sanderson of the fire brigade said: "Frazer's simple actions probably saved his family's lives. At night people should make sure all electrical equipment is switched off, all fires are extinguished and all doors are locked. If the unfortunate happens then get out, call us out and stay out."

Fire officers across Lancashire are hoping to introduce fire safety lessons into the school curriculum as well as investing in a CD Rom for school presentations to spread the message of fire safety.
