CLAIMS that a new quarterly newspaper about the work of Burnley Council would be little more than propaganda for the ruling Labour group have been denied.

Chief Executive Roger Ellis, told Independent councillor Harry Brooks: "It would be unlawful for the council to spend money supporting any political party.''

The Policy and Resources Committee agreed that the Burnley Challenge quarterly newsletter about regeneration projects and the annual newssheet, Burnley Borough News, should be produced as an eight-page quarterly tabloid at a cost of £20,280.

Coun Peter Kenyon said it was important to have guarantees of deliveries to every household.

Lib-Dem leader, Coun Gordon Birtwistle, said they ought to publish the bad news as well as the good and tell the people what they were planning to do about the messes in the town.

Coun Rafique Malik commented: "We are here to tell the people how well we are doing to help the people of the town.''
