IF we, as human beings and teachers, are to make the best world we can in which the compassionate quality of our society can mirror the compassionate quality of education, this process must start in every single classroom, or our hopes for a kinder society are going to be outnumbered by the cruelty and ignorance that is witnessed every day.

It does not matter to what nationality, religion, race and sex a person belongs or what knowledge, skill or profession the person has. The effects of destructive and cruel activities cast an onerous responsibility on all of us. Many of us have been fortunate to have had parents and teachers who recognised the value of nurturing our compassion for living creatures. Learning to be humane is a lesson that we owe to each child in this country.
